CFP – Reel Demonology: Ed and Lorraine Warren and The Conjuring Universe

Call for Papers

Currently consisting of seven (eight if one counts The Curse of La Llorona) interconnected films with additional entries in the pipeline, The Conjuring universe (2013-present) serves as one of the touchstone horror franchises of the modern era. Despite rising to industry prominence as one of the most profitable horror franchises of all time and one of the few properties to effectively execute a shared universe story world, The Conjuring universe has only been the subject of a few studies where it is often assessed alongside analogous, but thematically different, films such as Paranormal Activity (2009) and Insidious (2011). To fill this gap, the proposed collection will offer the first in-depth academic analysis of The Conjuring universe, its constituent films, and its mythology.

Suggested topics for this proposed collection include but are not restricted to:

  • The Conjuring universe’s use of religious iconography
  • Analyses of themes that cut across films in The Conjuring universe
  • Close analyses of individual texts (e.g., The Nun, Annabelle: Creation) in The Conjuring universe
  • Assessment of the real-life cases informing The Conjuring universe, including Ed and Lorraine Warren
  • Analyses of ‘sub-franchises’ (e.g., The Conjuring and Annabelle) in The Conjuring universe

Please send by (December 1) a 200–400 word abstract and a 50–100 word academic biography: Todd Platts (toddkplatts@gmail.com).

Preference will be given to proposals received by December 1, 2021. All notifications of acceptance will be emailed no later than December 31, 2021. If an abstract is accepted, essays can be expected to be between 6,000 and 7,500 words in length (including references).

Further inquiries should be sent to Todd Platts (toddkplatts@gmail.com).

The 21st Century Slasher Film: CFP for Special Issue #5

Call for Papers

When Siskel and Ebert famously launched their offensive against what they labeled as “Women in Danger films,” they effectively positioned slasher films as anti-feminist, exploitative, and lacking all artistic merit. But in the intervening years, this once much maligned sub-genre has enjoyed increasing acclaim for its subversive potential and reflection of cultural norms. This special issue seeks to examine the elements of the “new slasher” that potentially explain this shift.

We invite submissions on any 21st century slasher film(s). Emerging and advanced scholars, popular writers, and fans are invited to submit abstracts on any aspect of the sub-genre. We are especially interested in abstracts that engage with slasher film conventions. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Slasher tropes reimagined
  • Performance and identity
  • The impact of critical acclaim upon horror’s association with ‘low-brow’ culture
  • Monstrous nature and its evolution
  • How camp and pastiche code audience reception
  • Reboots and audience expectation
  • Location and narrative dread
  • Horror sub-genre crossovers
  • Engagement with postmodernist theory
  • Reflection of societal taboo

We would especially like to include articles on: Freaky, Halloween, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Black Christmas, and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.

Please submit abstracts of 500 words and a brief bio to Dawn Keetley and Elizabeth Erwin at  horrorhomeroom@gmail.com and dek7@lehigh.edu by July 15, 2020. Articles will be limited to 2,500 words and should be written for a general audience. Completed essays will be due September 15, 2020. We welcome all questions and inquiries!

CFP Nightmares Nations and Innovations, special issue of REFRACTORY

Call for Papers

This is a CFP for a special issue of ‘Refractory: A Journal of Entertainment Media’ that will be themed around Nightmares, Nations and Innovations. This edition will focus on horror outside of film/TV and will be published on Halloween 2021.

Articles (3-8k words) will explore the ways in which the horror genre functions in all its multifarious forms outside of film/TV, to explore the synergies between the horror film and popular culture. By approaching horror away from the screen, it hopes to examine the interconnections between the complex forces at work on both sides of the horror equation: the economies of modern entertainment industries and production practice, cultural and political forums, spectators and fans.
